Kona, a beautiful beach town on the western coast of the Big Island, is a heaven for persons who love food. From tropical fruits to authentic Hawaiian dishes, Kona has much to offer. Two types of shaved ice stand out among many culinary delights: Aloha shaved ice and Scandinavian shaved ice. I tried both during my recent stay in Kona, and I’m here to share my thoughts on which one is better and why.

To make Scandinavian ice, use a machine to make a finer texture of ice. Fruit purees, lingonberry or cloudberry, and condensed milk top the ice. Combining sweet and tart flavors with creamy condensed milk makes it a unique dessert.
But if I had to pick one, I would go with Aloha shave ice. The reason is simple: the flavors are more diverse and tropical, and the fluffy snow-like texture melts in your mouth. The syrup flavor also seeps through the ice, making each bite delightfully explosive. On the other hand, Scandinavian shave ice was still delightful, but the creamy condensed milk overpowers the fruit puree and takes away the unique flavors.
