If you’ve never been to Alaska, you’ll first notice the majestic mountain range surrounding the city. There’s often snow at the top, even in the summer. This is quite a sight to see for those who see real mountains for the first time.
HIKE OR BIKE THE TONY KNOWLES COASTAL TRAILk
I start my Alaskan adventure exploring the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. This 11-mile scenic trail winds along the coast. It offers stunning views of the city skyline and Chugach Mountains.
In addition, the Coastal Trail in Anchorage follows the shoreline of Cook Inlet and transitions into downtown. Rent a bike or simply take a leisurely walk. Keep an eye out for moose, eagles, and other wildlife that call this area home.
Pablo’s Bike Rentals has well-maintained bikes, and prices are fair. My family and I saw a moose and bald eagles on our trek. Bears can be on the trail, too, so be “bear aware.” Also, consider carrying bear spray, particularly if you’re not traveling in a group or walking.

Pros: The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail can be done as a day trip. It offers wildlife sightings and is an inexpensive way to cover a lot of ground.
Cons: While you do get outdoors, for those who want to get lost you’ll need to travel further outside Anchorage.
TOUR THE ALASKA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER
Next, for an up-close encounter with Alaska’s wildlife, head to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. From Anchorage, you’ll need to rent a car and take the 57 minute drive to Girdwood.
This large sanctuary provides a safe haven for injured and orphaned animals. These Alaskan animals include bears, moose, and musk oxen. Take a guided tour and learn about the center’s efforts to rehabilitate and care for these magnificent creatures.

Pros: Visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center offers and opportunity to see a lot of Alaskan animals. In addition, you get to view them up close and in one location.
Cons: Seeing animals in the wild without fences is always better for me. However, you still feel you’re out in the wild at the Conservation Center.
VISIT THE ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE MUSEUM
In addition, consider experiencing Alaska’s rich cultural heritage at the Alaska Native Heritage Museum. This world-class museum showcases the art, history, and culture of the Native Alaskans.
Tour the authentic lodging used by Native Alaskans and watch Alaskan Native dances live. Explore the interactive displays, attend a lecture or workshop, and gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse Alaskan cultures.

DRIVE TO BIRD POINT WAYSIDE OR PENGUIN’S RIDGE, ANCHORAGE
No trip to Anchorage is complete without a visit to the stunning Chugach State Park. The Chugach State park is a short drive from the city. It is a vast wilderness, expanding 5.5 million acres from Cooper Landing to Valdez, and beyond.
Here, you can hike through pristine forests, paddle on crystal-clear lakes, or embark on a thrilling glacier trek. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings, including bears, mountain goats, and Dall sheep.
If you’re taking a car from Anchorage just as you start to leave the city and head south, there are often mountain goats on the cliffside near Bird Point Wayside (Penguin’s Ridge). Here, you can also view kite surfers wandering around the surf taking advantage of the particularly windy conditions on this geographical turn in the landscape.

The food scene in Anchorage is diverse ranging from Mexican to Thai food. There are a lot of Thai restaurants in Alaska, and I’ve never stepped foot in a bad one. There’s two restaurants that stand out, the Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria and South Restaurant.
